Updated 15 October 2026. More and more searches now end with an AI-written answer instead of a list of links. Google shows AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions directly, and assistants increasingly recommend products and companies by name. That has created a new discipline with a new acronym: GEO, generative engine optimisation.
Is GEO a replacement for SEO, a rebrand, or something genuinely new? This guide explains the difference in plain language, separates what research supports from what is hype, and ends with a checklist you can apply to your own website this month.
What is GEO?
Generative engine optimisation is the practice of making your content easy for AI systems to find, understand and cite when they generate an answer. The term comes from a research paper by Princeton University and partners, published at the KDD 2024 conference. You will also see AEO (answer engine optimisation) and LLM SEO; they describe the same goal.
Classic SEO aims for a high position in a list of results. GEO aims for a mention inside the answer itself — the sentence where the AI says "according to…" or recommends a provider.
GEO vs SEO at a glance
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank high in search results | Be cited or recommended inside AI answers |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing result pages | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot |
| Success metric | Rankings, clicks, organic traffic | Citations, brand mentions, referral traffic from AI tools |
| Unit of optimisation | The page | The passage — a clear, quotable answer |
| Foundation | Crawlability, relevance, authority | The same — plus clarity, evidence and consistent facts about your brand |
The most important row is the last one. GEO is built on top of SEO, not instead of it. AI systems overwhelmingly retrieve content from the same indexes that power search: if your page is not indexed, it cannot be cited.
What changed in 2026
- AI Mode keeps expanding. Google continues to push its conversational AI Mode alongside AI Overviews, and in October 2026 a newer Gemini model was reported to reach AI Mode for paying AI subscribers. AI Mode does not show the traditional ten blue links: a page is either used in the answer or effectively invisible in that view.
- Fewer clicks per search. Vendor studies report that most AI Mode sessions end without a click to an external website, far more than on classic result pages. The exact figures vary by study, but the direction is consistent.
- ChatGPT added ads. Since February 2026 ChatGPT shows sponsored placements to free users. OpenAI says ads never change the answer — which makes being cited in the answer even more valuable. (See our complete guide to ChatGPT ads.)
- Google keeps fighting scaled content. 2026 brought several updates targeting large volumes of low-value, mass-produced pages, and Google refreshed its guidance on generative AI content on 1 October. Publishing hundreds of near-identical AI pages is now a real risk, not a shortcut.
What Google itself says
Google's documentation for site owners is clear: there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must simply be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Google also explains that these features may use "query fan-out" — running several related searches across subtopics to build one answer. In practice this means a page that answers several closely related questions well has more chances to be picked up.
What the research shows
The original GEO study tested different ways of rewriting content and measured how visible each source became in AI-generated answers. Its headline result is that the right changes can increase visibility by up to 40%. The methods that performed best were:
- Citing sources — referencing credible, named sources for claims.
- Adding quotations from relevant experts or authorities.
- Adding statistics — concrete, specific numbers instead of vague statements.
Two caveats matter. The 40% is a best case measured in a research setting, not typical live traffic, and the authors stress that results vary by domain. And classic keyword stuffing did not help — in some tests it made content less visible.
What does not work (or is overhyped)
- llms.txt as a ranking trick. An industry study of 300,000 domains found that roughly one in ten sites has an llms.txt file, server-log studies show AI crawlers rarely request it, and Google says it neither helps nor harms visibility in Search. It can be useful for developer documentation; for most business sites it is a low-priority extra, not a strategy. (We have one on windmedya.com — and we do not count on it.)
- Mass-producing AI pages. Hundreds of templated "best agency in [city]" pages are exactly what spam updates target. They rarely get cited and can drag down the whole domain.
- Writing for robots. AI systems favour content that reads clearly to humans: direct answers, logical structure, evidence.
The GEO checklist: what to do this month
1. Make sure AI systems can reach you
- Check that your pages are indexed in Google Search Console.
- In robots.txt, do not block the crawlers that power AI search and citations, such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. Note that Google-Extended controls use in Gemini models and apps; it does not remove you from Google Search or AI Overviews.
- Keep important content in the HTML, not only behind JavaScript, tabs or images.
2. Answer questions directly
- Start key sections with a one- or two-sentence answer, then expand.
- Use headings that match how people ask: "How much does…", "What is the difference between…".
- Add a short FAQ to service pages with the questions customers actually ask your sales team.
3. Add evidence
- Use specific numbers: prices or price ranges, delivery times, years of experience, number of projects.
- Cite official sources and name them.
- Add quotes from your own experts, with names and roles.
4. Make your brand facts consistent everywhere
- Use the same company name, address, phone and service descriptions on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
- Add structured data: Organization or LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Product or Service where relevant.
- Collect genuine reviews; AI answers frequently summarise them.
5. Build pages worth citing
- Original data, comparisons, pricing guides and clear how-to content get cited far more than generic text.
- Update important pages and show the date; freshness matters for fast-changing topics.
How to measure GEO
- Referral traffic: in your analytics, track sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Search Console: watch impressions for question-style queries; Google is adding reporting for its generative AI features.
- Prompt testing: each month, ask the main AI assistants the 10–20 questions your customers ask and record whether you are mentioned and which sources are cited instead.
- Leads: add "How did you find us?" with an "AI assistant" option to your forms.
So, GEO or SEO?
Both. SEO gets your pages into the index and ranking; GEO makes them the source an AI chooses to quote. The good news is that most GEO work — clear answers, evidence, structure, consistent facts — also improves classic SEO and conversion. The brands that win in 2026 will treat AI answers as a new shelf in the same shop, not a different shop.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI search systems retrieve content largely from search indexes, so solid SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds a layer focused on being cited inside AI answers.
Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google states there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Structured data and clear content still help Google understand your pages.
Does llms.txt improve AI visibility?
There is little evidence that it does. Google says it neither helps nor harms Search visibility, and AI crawlers rarely request the file. It is optional.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Changes to existing, indexed pages can be picked up within weeks. Building the authority and brand mentions that AI systems trust takes months, just like SEO.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
You can buy ads next to some AI answers, such as ChatGPT ads and ads in Google's AI experiences, but you cannot pay to be cited inside the answer itself. That part is earned.
