Updated 15 October 2026. ChatGPT is no longer an ad-free product. Since February 2026 OpenAI has been showing sponsored placements to free users, and in the months since, a self-serve Ads Manager has opened to businesses in dozens of countries. For the first time, brands can pay to appear at the exact moment someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation.

This guide explains how ChatGPT ads work, who sees them, where you can run them, how to set up your first campaign, and how they compare with Google Ads. We are a Google Partner agency in İstanbul and we already run OpenAI's measurement pixel on our own website, so the setup advice below comes from hands-on work, not speculation.

What are ChatGPT ads?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored units that appear below ChatGPT's answer, clearly labelled as sponsored. A typical ad is a card with your business name and icon, a short headline, a line of copy, an image and a link to your landing page. Retailers can also generate ads directly from a product catalogue (more on shopping ads below).

Two principles shape the product, and both matter for advertisers:

  • Ads do not change the answer. OpenAI states that ChatGPT's response is generated independently; paying for an ad does not make the assistant recommend you in its own answer. The ad sits next to the answer, not inside it.
  • Advertisers do not get conversations. Targeting is contextual. You choose the topics and situations where your ad is relevant; you never see what an individual user typed.

Who sees ChatGPT ads?

According to OpenAI's help centre, ads are shown only to users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are ad-free. Accounts identified as under 18 do not receive ads, Temporary Chats show no ads, and ads are not placed next to sensitive conversations such as health, mental health or politics.

Free users are the overwhelming majority of ChatGPT's audience, so even with these exclusions the reachable audience is very large — and it is an audience that is actively asking for help, comparisons and recommendations.

Where can you advertise? Availability in October 2026

The rollout has moved fast. Key milestones reported by OpenAI and the trade press:

Date (2026)Milestone
9 FebruaryAds testing begins for Free and Go users in the United States
SpringSelf-serve Ads Manager opens to US advertisers; cost-per-click buying and conversion tracking launch
11 AugustLaunch in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea
31 AugustSelf-serve Ads Manager opens in 31 European markets (all EU states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland)
Mid-SeptemberExpansion to further markets including Türkiye, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE

Industry trackers count roughly 60 self-serve markets as of early October. Because the list changes almost weekly, always check OpenAI's Ads Manager Availability page before you plan a budget.

One detail catches many businesses out: eligibility depends on the country of the legal entity that is billed, not on where you or your users are. OpenAI also notes that some new self-serve accounts can initially target only their home country, with other countries unlocking after identity verification and a certain amount of spend.

How to set up your first ChatGPT ads campaign

  1. Create a business account at ads.openai.com. Only business accounts are supported; agencies are invited by the client after the account exists.
  2. Verify the business and add billing. Expect to provide the legal name, registration details and a company card. Billing is in US dollars in most markets.
  3. Install measurement first. Add OpenAI's tracking pixel to your site (and the Conversions API if you have server-side tracking). Without it you can run reach and click campaigns, but you cannot optimise for conversions.
  4. Choose an objective: reach, clicks or conversions.
  5. Build ad groups around context hints — descriptions of the conversations where your ad is useful (see below).
  6. Upload creatives and submit. Every ad is reviewed before it can serve.

Objectives, bidding and budget

Ads Manager offers three buying options:

  • Reach — billed per thousand impressions (CPM), for awareness.
  • Clicks — billed per click (CPC). Guides citing OpenAI's help centre suggest starting with a maximum bid of about $3–5 per click; very low bids may not deliver.
  • Conversions — optimises toward a tracked conversion event, with a bid cap per ad group. Requires the pixel or Conversions API.

Ads are ranked in a relevance-weighted auction, so a highly relevant ad can beat a higher bid. There is no published account minimum; several Turkish and European sources report a daily campaign minimum of around $25. Treat that as a guide and check the current figure in your own account.

Context hints: the new "keywords"

ChatGPT ads are not keyword-matched like search ads. Instead, at ad-group level you write context hints: plain-language descriptions of what you offer, who it helps and when it is useful. OpenAI is explicit that these are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in any particular conversation.

What works in our experience:

  • Write hints the way a customer would describe their problem: "a small business owner comparing website builders and agencies for a new company site" beats "web design".
  • Keep one theme per ad group so you can see which situations convert.
  • Test short keyword-style hints against full-question hints in separate ad groups.
  • Add location and device targeting where it matters — for example only the cities you deliver to.

Creative best practices

The ad card is small, so every word counts. Published specs are still changing during the beta, but guides consistently describe a short title (roughly 16–24 characters recommended), one or two lines of copy (roughly 32–48 characters recommended), and a square image. Check the live limits in Ads Manager when you upload.

  • Match the question, not your slogan. The user has just asked something specific; the ad should read like the next helpful step.
  • Lead with the concrete benefit — price range, delivery time, free audit, demo.
  • Send clicks to a focused landing page that answers the same question, not to your homepage.

Shopping ads from your product feed

For e-commerce, OpenAI added product-feed ads: you connect your catalogue (the same structured file you already send to Google Merchant Center works), set filters for eligible products, and ads are generated from product names, images and attributes. The format is identical to other ChatGPT ads. OpenAI's first ad-tech partner is Criteo, and the system is reported to handle up to a million SKUs per advertiser.

Separately, ChatGPT's organic shopping results are powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol and merchant integrations such as Shopify Catalog. Ads and organic product discovery are separate systems — a clean, complete product feed helps you in both.

Measuring results

Install the OpenAI pixel and, ideally, the Conversions API. Agencies still report gaps between platform numbers and analytics, so tag every ad URL with UTM parameters and compare ChatGPT traffic with your own analytics and CRM. Judge the channel on qualified leads and revenue, not on click-through rate alone.

Ad policies to know

  • Political advertising is not allowed.
  • Financial, healthcare and legal advertisers can be approved, but reviews are manual and case by case — and in some markets these categories are still restricted.
  • Ads never appear next to sensitive personal topics.
  • OpenAI can decline or remove any advertiser, so keep landing pages accurate and claims verifiable.

ChatGPT ads do not replace Google Ads; they reach people earlier, while they are still exploring options. The opportunity right now is low competition: early advertisers can learn the platform before auction prices rise.

Paid ads are only half of AI visibility

Because ads never change ChatGPT's answer, the other half of the job is being cited in that answer. This is what generative engine optimisation (GEO) covers: clear, factual pages that answer real questions, structured data, consistent business information across the web and genuine reviews. The brands that win in AI search will combine both — an ad below the answer and a mention inside it.

Should you start now?

ChatGPT ads are worth testing if you sell something people ask an assistant about — services, software, travel, education, consumer products — and if you can measure conversions. Start with a small budget, two or three tightly themed ad groups and a dedicated landing page, run it for four weeks and compare cost per lead with your Google and Meta campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

You set your own budget and bids. Recommended starting click bids reported from OpenAI's help centre are around $3–5, and several sources report a daily minimum of about $25. Actual costs depend on your market and relevance.

Can I advertise on ChatGPT from my country?

Self-serve access depends on where your billed business entity is registered. Around 60 markets were open in early October 2026, including the US, the UK, the EU, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, South Korea and Türkiye. Check OpenAI's Ads Manager Availability page for the current list.

Do ChatGPT ads influence the answers?

No. OpenAI states that answers are generated independently of ads, and ads appear separately below the response, labelled as sponsored.

Can advertisers see my ChatGPT conversations?

No. Targeting is contextual and advertisers do not receive chat content. Users can also turn off ad personalisation and see why an ad was shown.

Can an agency manage my ChatGPT ads?

Yes. You create the business account, then invite your agency to manage campaigns, measurement and reporting.
