Updated 31 October 2026. October has been busy in AI. This post summarises the developments from Anthropic's official announcement pages that matter most to businesses, with dates and figures. Where we give our own interpretation, we say so.
Anthropic files with the SEC for an IPO
On 26 October 2026, Anthropic, PBC filed a registration statement on Form S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering of its Class A common stock. Key points from the company's announcement:
- The shares are intended to be listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol "ANT".
- The number of shares and the price range have not yet been determined.
- The registration statement has not yet become effective; the securities cannot be sold until it does.
- Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are listed as contacts for copies of the preliminary prospectus.
The announcement gives no offering date. This is not investment advice; we only report the company's own statement.
Claude Haiku 5.5: a small model at a much lower price
Introduced on 7 October 2026, Claude Haiku 5.5 is described by Anthropic as its "cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model". It targets high-volume, cost-sensitive work such as summaries, classification and database queries, plus speed-sensitive uses like live customer support. It is the first Haiku with an adjustable effort setting and is available on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Model ID: claude-haiku-5-5. Prices published by Anthropic (per 1 million tokens, prompts up to 100k tokens):
| Model | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.50 |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | $1.00 | $5.00 |
Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 is about 75% cheaper than Haiku 4.5 on average. The same page notes that Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 remain better for complex agentic coding, so the small model is not the right choice for every task.
AI for Science grows to 20 partners
On 28 October 2026, Anthropic announced that its AI for Science programme, started in 2025, now extends to foundations and institutions. Twenty partners — including the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Simons Foundation, the US National Science Foundation, the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the Francis Crick Institute and EMBL — provide researchers with free Claude credits. The programme aims to produce public goods such as open datasets, open-source software and open standards.

What does this mean for your business?
This part is our interpretation: falling prices for small models lower the cost of putting AI into everyday work.
- For high-volume jobs such as support bots, email triage and summarisation, the cost per task can drop noticeably.
- If your CRM or automation vendor uses AI, ask whether falling model costs are passed on to you.
- Test model choices on your own workload; the cheapest model is not always the most accurate.

Frequently asked questions
Is Anthropic publicly traded yet?
No. It filed its S-1 on 26 October 2026, but the registration statement has not become effective and shares cannot be sold at this stage.
How much cheaper is Claude Haiku 5.5?
According to Anthropic, about 75% cheaper than Haiku 4.5 on average. For prompts up to 100k tokens, input costs $0.10 and output $0.50 per million tokens.
Should small businesses switch to Haiku 5.5?
It depends. It can make sense for simple, high-volume work such as summaries, classification and support; for complex coding Anthropic recommends its larger models. Run a small test on your own data.
